Moving - Why does anyone in their right mind do it?
For anyone who hasn’t seen earlier posts, we bought a Countrywide short sale property, got everything closed, then proceeded with paint and flooring which were necessary for our move-in. Once those things were completed, we decided it wouldn’t be too difficult to pack and move ourselves, rather than employing the services of professional movers. After all, we’ve moved many times with just friends and family helping to get things shifted from one place to a new one.
There’s a difference between being in your 20’s, having minimal possessions and many friends who are willing to spend a bit of time for the tradeoff of free pizza and beer. Moves in that age frame take 4-6 hours if memory serves me correctly. Put a couple of decades on the age factor, many of your friends have distinct commitments of their own, or bad backs, or insert your own example here. You can’t move in 4-6 hours, nor can you move in 4-6 days. All the little “decorations” that seem to multiply of their own accord, all need to be carefully packed and protected from incedental moving damage. Somehow, the concept of “why don’t we just dump all that stuff” doesn’t seem to fly too well with the significant other. if you are considering moving, my suggestion would be that you do not bring the “dumping stuff” subject up, it seems to cause lots of disturbance and animosity.
We’re about halfway through moving the mountains of possessions over to the new property and we’re only about 3-4 days past the optimized schedule, so I think we’ll be fine considering I have several weeks padding on the timeframe. A general suggestion for anyone who is thinking about moving on their own without a moving professional, teenagers, although they may be in good physical shape and capable of sustained physical activity, aren’t truly capable of sustained physical activity. It makes me understand why high school athletic coaches are the way they are, and I thank God I don’t teach high school.
