Help, please! Foreclosure questions

If you owe more on a home than it is worth, would it be better to let it be foreclosed on? Say, it is mortgaged at 80,000 and would only sell for around 62,000 and you have been in it for 12 yrs. This is a new mortgage at a variable rate for 30yrs! Trying to help my son out. Can wages be garnished in Alabama for mortgage payments? Thanks for ANY help.
