It's thrown around too causally without really understanding the ramifications. It will follow you for 7-10 years. If your only reason for filing is to stay in your home, I don't think you're doing the right thing.
You have options - sell, refinance (I know, easier said than done), etc. There are lots of investors that can give you options.
Moving on from your house is, in my opinion, much better and easier than having the dark cloud of bankruptcy over your head for the next 10 years. Find an out - sale, short sale, workout - and get out of the house. Find something more affordable and start over.
As for hardball, you don't have one. The lender is the pitcher.
