Lost property

We lost our property on 11/26 to sheriff sale. This is our former home that we rent to our son. Our problem is that the notices we & our attorney received regarding the relief from automatic stay referred to our home, not the property that was actually up for sheriff sale. As a result we misunderstood that a sheriff sale was imminent. Our lawyer obviously was not on top of things as he gave us no warning that we were about to lose a home that we were preparing to sell to our children. Now he claims we have no grounds to upset the sale. We don't know whether to fight this of if we're wasting our time. Shouldn't our lawyer, who got copies of the relief from automatic stay, have filed the necessary paperwork to delay this, to buy us some time?
