Title Search

Hello. I'm new to the game and have become stumped trying to determine the Chain of Title on a prospective property. I don't have a 'special relationship' with any of the title companies, and have been quoted between $400-$500 per search request. That's too expensive when multiplied by the number of deals I've been told I'll have to look at before I find a winner. I've gone to the Los Angeles county recorder's office and find it a complete mess. How can I solve my problem?
