They're all gonna find out anyway once you do file. If you are talking about credit card and finance companies who call you 42 x a day wanting money that you don't have, you might as well tell them that you have spoken with an attorney, you are filing a ch. 13 and you will send the case number, etc., to them through your attorney as soon as possible. Then give them your attorney's phone number and name and tell them to call him. They probably won't, but they won't call you either.
If you mean your mortgage company and your car loan or something secured, I'd hedge a little bit till you have actually filed before I told them. I don't know why exactly, I don't think they can accelerate your mortgage just because you tell them you're thinking about it, but still that's what I would do. AS someone who knows nothing about it, that's my advice. Good luck.
