I am looking to purchase a house that is in forclosure

Hi-
My husband and I are looking to purchase a house in our town that is in forclosure. The whole process is new to us and we are not really sure the best way to go about it. Do we wait to go and bid at the auction or is there a way to get in early? Is it usually best to approach the owners and make them an offer or approach the bank?
