Since your wife was on the loan, she is responsible for repayment. If the loan didn't get paid, the lender could seek a judgement against her. That's the most they can really do.
The contract between your wife and your in-laws doesn't have anything to do with the lender and the loan, the lender just goes by who signed on the loan.
