Help on getting started -Please

A carpenter that wants to get started in foreclosures or just purchasing destressed properties. Don't have much to start off with but need to grow a nest egg to support family. Where and how do I start off in Northern Illinois? Credit is tarnished from losing time from the long winters and no work and being laid off.

I would appreciate anyone's advice
