trustee sale

hi to all. my question is what is a trustee sale. i received a foreclosure notice but the house had an offer already for short sale. is this possible when we opted for short sale and still awaiting for the banks approval of the offer. these lendrs dont accept deed in lieu so we pted for short sale, but how come they dont attend to the offer that was sent when they know we're running out of time, the foreclosure notice is out already, wha other options do we have and what is a trustee sale. thanks a lot, im in california.
