Getting Started - Foreclosure - help needed NY

Hi,

I'm just starting to look into buying a foreclosure. I've always thought that buying a foreclosure house would cost a lot less then going though a Realtor (I might be wrong). Since I do not know much about this yet, can someone please point me in the right direction on how to get started on the whole process? Where to get free good information? Do I go directly though a bank? Where do I start? Thanks,
