You know, when I first read your subject line I thought "That's pretty harsh".
With a bit of contemplation, and the realization you posted more about life, as opposed to a restricted foreclosure answer, I have to agree.
I do find the comment that "he ran up the electric bill to the point his father couldn't pay" somewhat telling. I perpetually complain to my kids that they can't take hour long showers(electric water heater) and leave things running that don't need to run. It's not so much the money, but a discipline thing.
My oldest son, who is mostly independent, seems to have internalized the concept that "there is a difference between what you want, and what you need". He pays for the things he needs, and ocassionally tries to get us to subsidize the things he wants. ;)
When there is no concept taught about preserving assets, I'd agree you need to look at the outlook of the parent.
