Kelly,
There is a huge problem with trying to determine intent from someone who is a relatively new poster. Are they trying to be helpful, or are they just looking for a venue to make some money? Now, if they're pushing adult products or various drugs, they are either filtered before posting, or removed immediately. There is no question about their intent.
But what happens when an innocent visitor posts something they consider helpful, but it could be interpreted as possible advertising? It might get deleted, or it might be left up. One poster today made six replies that included one short possibly helpful response, one borderline repsonse, the other four were "call me, email me, visit my site" type responses. All of those replies were deleted because the intent became obvious.
Officially, there is no advertising allowed on this board. Posters who provide helpful responses over a period of time are allowed a lot more discretion with their posts over newer posters. If long time posters include contact information and/or link out, they don't get deleted.
Links to helpful information are perfectly acceptable under the terms of service. Repeated links to the same, or very similar sites, get looked at much more critically because we go back to the "intent" concept.
If you aren't sure about a link, I'd say make the link, the worst that can happen is the post gets deleted.
