Nothing is impossible, but, at the same time, you need to consider what a major event this is in your life, the size of the debt, the possible repercussions if it goes wrong and then decide if it's a project you want to take the do-it-yourself route with. As a Realtor naturally I am biased, but, in your case, I'm also a disinterested party -- I've nothing to gain. Seek professional advice, but make sure the person you talk to is experienced with short sales. Don't be someone else's learning experience. If you're talking to your lender, ask their opinion.
