Well, that's the whole problem....I never received ANY notification of a Sheriff's Sales whatsoever. I know it appears in newspapers and such. In addition, I never received anything stating when my redemption period would end. Just yesterday, I received unrelated communication from the mortgage company with ME still listed as the property owner on it. I looked and looked and looked online and finally found out the Sheriff's Sale was 8/17/06, which would (I think) mean my redemption period ended 2/17/07. The trash out must have been done in mid-May since I checked up on things and mowed the lawn and such about May 10th. At that point, I could still get in, my stuff was still there, and the utilities worked because I was still paying them (gas, water, electric). The part that upsets me and that the law confuses me on is that according to almost everything I've read, I should have received MULTIPLE notices of some sort regarding the situation. I am a registered voter at the address I have lived since June 2006, so the county KNOWS my mailing address. Even so, the post office forwards mail for 18 months. And, my cousin who works for the Postal Service says that even Certified Mail will make it to a forwarded address, although it may take a couple weeks. In addition, several of the items I had remaining in that house had my name and my cell phone number on them, and they were written quite large and in places you would see, i.e. the back side of a wall hanging...SOMEONE would have seen that before it was thrown out or whatever. Regardless of the law, you would think that any human being with a conscience of any kind would think "Maybe I should call him...he might want these." The point is that although I am definitely at fault for 1) allowing the foreclosure, 2) moving out early, and 3) leaving some things behind, when it comes right down to it, if anyone had called me and said "You have 24 hours to get here and get your stuff out," you'd better believe I would have been there immediately.
And yes, there were a couple of expensive items in there. I can live without them. What I can't replace is the ONLY box I left behind on a shelf in the closet. It contained every photograph I had ever taken until about '04 when I got my digital camera. Also in that box were all four of my high school yearbooks, my high school diploma, and my tassel. THAT is the one thing I am most upset about because they can never be replaced.
Thanks everyone for your help. If you have any more comments or suggestions, I will definitely take them.
