foreclosure question

we have spouse loss of income and will not be able tp pay mortgage that is continually rising. we owe more than the house is worth. with only one income i cannot make the payment we have zero credit card debt andhate to lose my credit. Can I relocate and buy a cheaper house and walk away from this house before the deliquent payments start.
