Short Sale after Sheriff Sale?

I am currently going through the foreclosure process; the sale is on 11/7/07. A realtor came to my door and said that he would like to see about doing a short sale during my redemption period. I have a 6 month redemption period and he said that he would like to start the process of the short sale in Feb. 08. I need to be out by 5/7/08. Is this true that I could ask for a short sale after the sheriff sale? Thanks!
