Short Sale??

My home is in AZ. I am current on all my debts and still have positive equity in my home that i thought would have to be entirely wiped out before the 1st lien holder would allow a short sale. Your comments are appreciated. What effect would stopping payments to the 1st but keeping current on the 2nd have? How much time do I have before having to move out?
