Foreclosure in NY

Due to current divorce proceedings, I am thinking about walking away from my home. Both our names are on the loan but I've been the one making all the mortgage payments for the last 5 yrs. Times are getting really tough for me right now and I'm thinking this would be my best option at this time. I've talked to the mortgage co & explained my situation & asked if they would be willing to work with me. I was told no, either pay the mortgage or they would start foreclosure. I'm afraid of my house being sold for half of what I owe & I would be stuck paying the balance owed. Any suggests??
