I think that you are on the right course with the short sale. And don't worry about the 1099, you are covered (IMHO) by the tax relief act.

If you are considering a short sale you have accepted the fact that the house will be gone, one way or the other. Bankruptcy will not really help your situation that much. I think it will do more harm than good under the circumstances.

But that is my opinion...
