Most banks do an inventory of anything left. Those I have worked with will determine if there is value to the personal items ($300 -$500+ is typically)and will store them on site or off. A notice will be posted.
As said before leave a note on the doors explaining the situation and that you want the personal items. Include your contact info.
Be proactive.
Oh, if someone is still in the house they will not normally rekey. They will start eviction.
