owners owe money?

we live in il. after the house is sold in forclosure and the bank does not get the full amount back from the orignal loan amount, are the orignal owners responsible for the difference? Does the banks go after the money or is the difference forgivin by the bank? Example loan was 200,000.00 bank sells house for 100,000.00 are the orignal owners responsible for the other 100,000.00?
