In addition to calling your lender, you should send in your request for a 'workout' via certified mail. Include a letter describing why you fell behind, and why you can now afford payments if the loan was reinstated.
You can also speak with a bankruptcy attorney who can see if you would qualify for an affordable Chapter 13 repayment plan.
