Buying Foreclosures

Hello,
I'm been using realtytrac to track and found one property that I'm interested in doing more research on. The auction date has now passed which was on 7/6. I contacted the trustee to see if I could find additional information on the property and was told that the property reverted back to the lender because no bids were made at auction. They were nice enough to provide me with information on the foreclosing beneficiary. My question is: Are foreclosing beneficiaries always lenders or can they be individual owners? The reason I am asking is because the trustee gave me the name and address of the man who was the foreclosing beneficiary and the property reverted at sale to him because there were no bidders.
I'm not quite sure what that means. Is he now the new owner, meaning it's been sold or can I contact him to inquire about selling the property?
Any feedback/suggestions anyone can provide would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!
