has anyone received a deficiency judgement ??

Just wondering if there are any individuals out there who have been ordered to pay deficiency judgements, or is it common for the bank to just issue a 1099 to the individual? How/when do banks find out whether or not a person in foreclosure has assets to cover the losses that banks are realizing?
