There has been a huge expansion in the number of companies promoting loss mitigation over the past year or so. Some of it can be explained by the increased demand, but I think an awful lot of the growth is probably based on "opportunity". There are some larger loss mitigation firms that provide training, and website space for people interesting in doing that kind of work. They charge about $25/month. That's a pretty low barrier to entry.
If I was seeking loss mitigation assistance, one of my parameters would probably be time in the business. A company that was in business before the current increase in foreclosure rates would be safer, IMHO.
So far, I'll say the checklist should be:
1. Does this company only do loss mitigation?
2. Has this company been in existence for some time?
