foreclosure auction help

my husband and i tried selling our house for 2 years. finally we had try short sale because we had jobs waiting in another state and couldnt afford to keep the house any longer. 40 showings and no offers on short sale now its going in foreclosure. but i cannot afford to pay the debt if the house auctions for less!! how do these auctions work do they start the big at my loan amount? can i still do deed in lieu? or will that have debt involved as well. i dont want my house anymore, and i cant afford to pay when they have already taken $50,000 of my money in interest alone not to mention i have lost all equity as well.
