approaching forclosure in MI

We have taken second jobs, cut down on expenses, and even taken in a renter! It's just not working out. I'm considering letting my home go into foreclosure because I know I can't sell it and get what I need for it.
Doesn't PMI protect me?! Isn't that what it is?! If I default on my loan and the bank takes my house in foreclosure, doesn't PMI protect them so I don't get screwed into owing the difference, or a 'deficiency judgment' as I've heard it been called... help?
