Reply to summons

I am writing and rewritng my reply letter to the courts about my summons I received. How is it that I should beg and plead with the courts for more time? I am requesting a hearing be scheduled but can I ask for a delay in scheduling in hopes of avoiding further action (as in I'll sell or deed in lieu if I can)? I was told to reply then after hearing is scheduled call for an extension to obtain legal counsel but that sounds quite silly when I am trying to handle this calmly and with the attorney (?) for the lender directly. So, how to begin the begging for time???
