investment problems

I own 5 duplex's in Iowa and was relocated out of state 4 yrs ago. I don't have a property manager and have been going upside down keeping the properties paid for. If I let them go back to the bank, and they don't sell at auction for as much as I owe, what happens then? Do they come after my out of state personal residence, automobile, possessions? Are there any alternatives to letting them go back to the bank when I can't keep up the cost of maintianing them? I get fines each month for grass over growth and snow removal and I'm thousands of miles away.
