assignment of mortgage

i am a renter, and i was recently served with a foreclosure notice.
a few days ago, i noticed that an "Assignment of Mortage" was also filed in court, in which the lender of the mortgage was assigned the mortgage from the owner of the home.
The owner continues to reassure me that he is working on refinancing the home.
Can anybody explain what this "Assignment of Mortgage" means in terms of the foreclosure process?
Does this mean that the owner (my landlord) no longer has any rights to this property?
