foreclosure

I have a question my house is going into sheriff sale Oct 15th, I have never been thru this and not sure what to do, my morgage holder says there is nothing they can do to help me, I fell onto hard times, surgery which cost me my job, the only income I have coming in is from my son's social security(His dad passed away) and I am waiting to see if I qualify for SS disabilty due to the fact I have to have another surgery in a week, so with this I have not been able to pay house payment along with keeping the heat and others thing going in the house, when/if the house sells, am I responsible for any money not met in the sale? If I could not afford to keep house how am I suppose to be able to pay anything back to them?
