RIP Tanta

Doris Dungey, who blogged as Tanta on Calculated Risk, died yesterday of ovarian cancer.  A former mortgage banker, she was smart, literate and one of my favorite people to read regarding mortgage and lending issues.  Tanta will certainly be missed.

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac regulation in 2004

Excerpts can skew the impression of a person’s overall concept, but I find this video interesting considering it happened in 2004, just before the biggest real estate bubble ever seen.

Moving - Why does anyone in their right mind do it?

For anyone who hasn’t seen earlier posts, we bought a Countrywide short sale property, got everything closed, then proceeded with paint and flooring which were necessary for our move-in.  Once those things were completed, we decided it wouldn’t be too difficult to pack and move ourselves, rather than employing the services of professional movers.  After [...]

A heartwarming story

Occasionally you’ll run across a story about someone doing something for another person without expecting anything in return.  This story from ABC News is like that.
Mock told “Good Morning America” that she will take out a bank loan to finance about half the cost and will let Pottsboro and her family live in the house [...]

Mortgage defaults and the foreclosure mess

Bloomberg has a writeup on faith based groups geting involved in foreclosure prevention and loan modification.  It’s generally a news piece discussing how those groups are assisting homeowners with lender negotiation.
Here are the parts I find interesting:
Flores refinanced his mortgage through IndyMac, the Pasadena, California-based company that was seized by the FDIC in July. Two [...]

Foreclosure loan modification - It ain’t easy

Mortgage lender IndyMac was taken over by the FDIC this past summer with the head of the FDIC, Sheila Bair, instituting a modification process for loans that were 60 days or more past due.  They estimate about 40,000 loans, or 2/3 of the total loans serviced by IndyMac will be eligible for the loan modification [...]

Foreclosure and emotional impacts

There’s an article today from Chicago Tribune about the volume of foreclosures in Cook County, IL and the toll it takes on the judges who handle the increasing amount of foreclosures.
Judge Clifford Meacham states:
“I know that money is important, and I really understand that banks are entitled to repossess homes. But that doesn’t mean that [...]

Illinois Sheriff will restart foreclosure evictions

I posted a while back about Sheriff Thomas Dart who decided he wasn’t going to process foreclosure evictions anymore due to some renters not receiving enough notice of the foreclosure.
Innocent tenants [will no longer] be victimized by an uncaring, reckless system.” Dart said.
One of his requirements: Banks must prove that they informed tenants of a [...]

Ups and Downs - how to keep track

Real estate markets are changing, obviously by location, but also by what happens in the greater world, which is the U.S. economy as a whole.  That’s not to minimize Europe or Asia, because they do have an impact, but U.S. financial policy has a much greater, direct impact on how housing markets move in the [...]

Should a Sheriff decide state law?

Law enforcement officers in Chicago will no longer evict residents from foreclosed properties, Sheriff Thomas J. Dart of Cook County announced Wednesday. from NY Times
Foreclosure laws are defined by the state where the property is located, and occasionally the county where the property is located.  Why Sheriff Dart has decided to not fulfill the duties [...]
